It’s almost Halloween again! While Halloween is one of my all-time favorite holidays owing to my childlike love of dressing up, now that I have a job and what not I no longer seem to have time to sew an epic costume that makes people feel bad about themselves (jokes…). These costumes are all pretty easy to pull together at the last minute, so you can go to all of your fancy-pants Halloween parties with your costumed head held high as you aren’t going as a sexy nurse for the fourth year in a row.

Snow White
With two Snow White films and Once Upon a Time released this year, she’s pretty much the fairy tale character of 2012, and you’ve got four different versions to choose from; Kristen Stuart (Snow White & The Huntsmen), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror), Ginnifer Goodwin in Storybrooke, and Ginnifer Goodwin in magical fairytale land. Whichever Snow you choose, I’d recommend powdering yourself with some baby powder to get nice and pale, and finishing the look off with red lipstick, bright eyes, and some subtle blush. You’ll also need dark hair, so consider a wig if you’re blonde. Or… Read the rest of this entry »

I would love to be able to say that every year I am invited to more Halloween costume parties than I can possibly attend, and I am often left improvising top-notch costumes that are a brilliant combination of originality and whimsy at the last minute in order to attend each party in a unique outfit. Oh well, we can’t all have everything. So, just in case you are the in-demand social butterfly that I am not, here are ten easy little black dress costumes you can quickly whip up and head out in.

A Red-Winged Blackbird
I love this idea. I may use it myself. All you need is a red and orange scarf. Drape it around your shoulders and set the look off with some dramatic red and orange eye make-up. Et voila.

I landed in Glasgow, Scotland at 9:30AM on Wednesday, September 5, with my body thinking it was 2:30AM, and enough adrenaline and excitement to not really care. I’d planned to arrive in Belfast by sea; it only seemed appropriate, as it was the ship building capital of the UK (and even the world) for so very long. This plan involved taking a train to Ayr from Glasgow Central Station, a bus from Ayr to Cairnryan, and then finally a ferry to Belfast.

The sensation of being all snuggled under warm covers in an otherwise chilly room. There’s something just wonderful about knowing that just outside that duvet, those three quilts, and that sleeping bag, there’s a whole lot of air that’s 5° (or maybe less). Knowing that if you wanted to, you could stick your big toe out from under the covers and it would be enough to cool off your entire body in an instant. Or you could try sticking your leg out into that yet-untouched corner of the mattress, which will be wonderfully cool, just like the other side of the pillow. And sure, your face is a bit cold, but you’ve wriggled down as far as you can go without suffocating yourself, and it’s all just fine.

Finding an exact copy of something you own in a thrift shop. Not a mass-produced shirt from the GAP, that’s too easy. I’m talking something your Grandmother gave you—maybe the dress she wore to the prom—or perhaps your Dad’s favourite pair of paisley bellbottom jeans from the 1970’s. Something that, up until this point, you had thought to be completely unique, and now you’re forced to realize that someone else in the world has the same fantastic preference for paisley trousers as your father.

I watched Somewhere in Time soley because it is set in 1912. Also… Christopher Reeves. Heh heh. The white theater dress caught my eye for a few reasons. I’ll admit I was primed to notice it; it has a few similarities with the dinner dress from Titanic (mainly the diagonal fabric panels across the front), and I had seen it mentioned in a few analysis of the costumes from Titanic.
