Dry Summer Body Oil

Body oils sounds like they should be the perfect, easy, DIY. Take some oil, put it on your body, and you’re done. Right? Unfortunately, if you’ve tried it you’ll know that approach can leave you feeling pretty darn oily. Why do commercial body oils leave your glowing while DIY ones can leave you feeling greasy? In this blog post I’m going to teach you the formulation strategy big companies use to create ultra light body oils and I’ll share a simple, all natural base formulation that is super customizable so you can easily create your very own dry body oils like the ones sold by Glossier and Morrocanoil.

Summer Glow Body Oil

Today I’m sharing a Bee-Bettering of one of my most popular formulations on YouTube; my Luminous Summer Body Oil. The original formulation is almost exactly four years old, published on July 6, 2017 (!). I’d made shimmer oils before the 2017 version; the general formulation outline is mostly liquid oils and emollients + enough shimmery mica to get the desired level of shimmer and colour on the skin. It’s definitely a simple enough concept, though there’s plenty of room for refinement.

This simple, all-natural Argan Plum Body Oil features two of my favourite carrier oils and some stunning antioxidants for an ultra-lovely skin treat that you can make in just a few minutes. You don’t need any heat—just measure, stir, package, and you’re done! I designed this formulation to be a body oil, but it can also be used on the face and hair if you want. Let’s dive in!

Passionfruit Velvet Dry Oil Mist

Today’s formulation was inspired by Glossier’s “Body Hero Dry-Touch Oil Mist”—I saw it on their website and loved the idea of an oil mist, remembering reading on Lotion Crafter that fractionated coconut oil is “light enough to spray through a pump sprayer”. That got the formulation wheels in my brain turning 😊 There are almost no overlapping ingredients between this formulation and the Glossier product, save for the fractionated coconut oil (or caprylic/capric triglycerides) and the tocopherol, so it’s definitely more “inspired by” than “duping”, but I love it. It’s an ultra-light, softly fragrant oil that mists beautifully over the skin. Massage it in after towelling dry post-shower or bath, and you’ll be rewarded with soft, moisturized, lightly perfumed skin without any greasiness. Perfection!

Cinnamon Cocoa Massage Bars

I had a lot of fun creating these deceptively simple Cinnamon Cocoa Massage Bars. They’re silky smooth, cocoa and cinnamon-scented body butter bars that liquify readily on the skin, transforming into massage oil. Inspired by a LUSH product, I had a lot of fun experimenting with different ratios and techniques, as well as testing the bars to make sure they transformed into a gorgeous, slippy, long-lasting massage oil. The technique is really important with this DIY, so make sure you’re taking your time and watching the video so you get it right!
