I live in the United States. I don’t sell stuff and have only recently started making my own stuff. I evaluate what I’m buying based a lot on the Environmental Working Groups ratings. I’m not a scientist so I have to rely on others to do that research for me. I definitely wish there were more regulations of cosmetics and also herbal supplements. But I’m guessing it all comes down to money. Takes money to regulate and govern such things so who pays for that? You could try and make the companies pay to get certified but then that could potentially become a big burden on small DIY people.

And honestly much of regulation in the US is complaint driven, not a certifying or regulating everyone kind of thing. I mean if you’ve ever watched some of Gordon Ramsey’s shows and seen some of the disgusting stuff that happens in restaurants it is because they can get away with it. Restaurants aren’t often visited to see if there is compliance within the law. Once they are open they are open. If you complain to the health department a restaurant could get inspected but they aren’t inspected regularly. At least that is the case in Oregon. May vary state to state.

I do wish we took more care with inspections of food, cosmetics etc. But we’d have to somehow get the government to set up regulating bodies and create laws to do this and it seem like, at least in this country, we don’t value that. I’m sure if legislators tried to pass laws there would be strong opposition from lobbyists and I often notice that lobbyists win.
