ParticipantThank you!
It’s great that you found a routine that works for you. It often takes curlies a very long time to figure out their hair, especially if their parent’s didn’t know how to. I’m kinda lucky in the sense that I’ve almost always used natural products on my hair since that is what my mom used. I didn’t use conditioner though until I was maybe 15 (which seems crazy), since my mom never did and I thought frizz was normal with curls. Then the conditionner I used had silicones. Now, I found my holy grail products. It took me a few months to figure out the moisture/protein balance of my hair (at first conditioner made my hair look amazing, then it suddenly turned into a fluffy mess that felt as though I had barely any hair, so I had to do a bunch of protein treatments to correct it, which eventually was too much and again my hair became a fluffy mess with almost no curls). Now I figured out that I start washing my hair with a protein conditioner, then wash with Pacifica body wash (I use it as shampoo and love it!), then brush in shower, then use AG recoil + AG plastique. If I use conditioner after shampoo, plus the recoil, it gets overmoisturized, but if I don’t use any conditioner, it’s too rough. I used to make my own hair gel, but stopped because it was before I discovered preservatives, so I had to make it quite often, and then found AG and am still using it up (I ended up getting many bottles as a gift). Now, at 19 I finally figured out my hair routine, which is earlier than a lot of curlies/wavies, but much later than straight haired people do.
I would love to try to help Connie! Ask away. I also helped my grandmother with her hair. She thought that she had frizzy straight hair, so she would straighten it to get rid of the frizz. I gave her some methods and now she has lovely 2a-2b waves. It only took 65 years 😂

ParticipantThat’s great Cyn! I’m glad you like it.

ParticipantI just want my days to be more awesome than not, and where I feel wearing my hair down is cool than wearing it up. 😂I’m getting there. Slowly… but very slowly. I’m like 2 weeks no bad shampoo or bad conditioner, so my hair is starting the transition and some days I’m whoo hoo! Other days, I’m like, huh. My hair hasn’t full out hated me yet, but we’ve had close calls.

ParticipantI want to plop! Please?! It would be so cool! My hair probably isn’t long enough, evil hair. Lol
My hair goes between wavy, wavy body with curls, and who knows. My most curly was back in 2012. I had my pic taken with John Barrowman on my birthday at DragonCon. He even sang me a song. 😁

ParticipantHi Joyful! I’m slowly figuring this out, although I confess to ignoring my hair most days 😛 I have found so far that protein =bad. I haven’t used sulphate etc stuff since October, but my hair has just frizzed out. I recently got my hands on AG recoil and I love it! I cannot convince my curls to stay all day, they just turn into a mess. pretty for a couple hours and blech
So I wear it up to work, up to workout and down but rarely. I have pictures once I take the time to actually post them 🙂 IT’s sure not as pretty as your hair.February 28, 2017 at 10:36 pm #20738Joyful
ParticipantFor most low porosity people, protein isn’t great. I think that I need it simply because my whole body does (blood tests show that I don’t have enough protein). Would you mind telling me your whole hair story and what you’ve tried so I can get a better idea? When you say they turn into a mess, do you mean frizz, or just lose the curl?

ParticipantWhen I first started CG, I was using a ton of conditioner, even leaving a bit in. It removed a ton of frizz on the first try, and progressively improved (until I overmoisturized). Frizz is usually caused by lack of moisture. Your hair floats up towards the moisture in the air. Low porosity people often have a harder time getting the moisture in since the hair doesn’t soak anything up, but once it’s there, it stays longer. Have you tried deep conditioning masks?

ParticipantTwin, Dude in the picture with you is CUUUUTE! You should have been hugging him a little closer! Haha!
I think your hair has some full out curl potential, not just waves. I bet the more you do the CG method, the curlier you get! Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch!!
Joyful, I’ve used AG Recoil before. Its actually the first curl cream I bought when starting CG. It worked well, but I’ve got a whole list of different ones I want to try. I think I have five or six in my cabinet as we speak! I am such a product junkie! The one I’ve been using lately, the Shea Moisture Smoothie, I think it is, has given me the best curls I’ve had yet from a curl cream. Two more I like are ones by Jane Carter Naturals and Briogio. Jessicurl’s Rockin Ringlets is awesome too! I layer it in winter, spring, and fall over my curl cream. That combined with just about any curl cream will give me great curls too. I can only get it online and CurlMart frequently has it out of stock, so I don’t have it all the time. My backup is Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker. In summer, all I need is the Camille Rose or a curl cream, then gel, and I’m good to go!
I had no one to show me what to do with my hair, so you are very lucky Joyful! My mom has curly hair but she shampoos, no conditioner, brushes, then blow dries straight. It still curls up so I don’t know why she bothers, but she’s a stubborn old woman so I don’t even try to change her ways! Haha! It took her almost three years to try my homemade soap, so there’s no way I’m even going down the road of talking her into trying the CG method! I don’t have that much energy!

ParticipantTwin, the hottie is currently on Arrow, the TV show. Before, he played Captain Jack Harkness from Dr. Who and Torchwood. 😁
Full curlies? Well, today was a twirly day. I had spiral waves and curls of sorts. I got a sample of argan oil from Essential Depot, so I did a lovely scalp serum overnight and then deep conditioning with my hair masque. Then boing. 😂 So, we’ll see what happens tomorrow.
I’m waiting for my new stuff. And Twin, you are an Influence even when you’re not online. I was at NaturallyCurly and shopped at their spring sale with coupon. At least I’ll be stocked for a while. Maybe. I hope. 😂

ParticipantTwin, if you’re like me, you will want to try ALL the products and will have to stop yourself from filling up your cabinets! When you get your receipt out of your CurlMart box, hang on to it! There’s a 15% off coupon on the back, I think it is, or maybe at the bottom. Wait for CurlMart to have a 20% off store-wide sale then BOOM! Slap that 15% off on top of it! Yes! When you get that box, repeat above steps. 😁
One day I figure I’ll get around to duping some of my products after I’ve tried everything on the market at least once! Haha!
March 1, 2017 at 8:29 pm #20752Cynnara
ParticipantYes. I need to learn to dupe. And coupons are good. They help. Lol. It’s how I afforded the sale.

ParticipantConnie, my hair was like that in the beginning. I could cleanse it, style it, and it would look good. By end of day it was droopy and sad. It took probably a full year of co-washing, protein treatments and deep conditioning treatments to get my hair in better shape to where the curl would actually stay in it all day. It still frizzes when it rains or if I spray it with water to perk up the curl. I try to think of frizz as each strand of hair springing up, each curling up in their own direction and going wherever they want to! What’s funny is the days it’s all frizzy (by my standards) are the days I get compliments on my hair. I’m looking at my friends, saying “Wha??? It’s all frizzy!” and they’ll tell me they didn’t even notice it. So, maybe it’s just me!

ParticipantDay 2, sprayed with water and smooshed on top of my head for 10 minutes then 45 minutes of yoga, lol…it won’t last, but all that hair talk made me think I should share

ParticipantI still haven’t deep conditioned, but I am eyeing up that hair pudding of Marias to try. No avocado oil but I’m sure I could sub….if I ever stop with the overtime at work and play again 😛
