ParticipantI’m finding the mascara flakes off and collects under my eyes after about an hour. I’ve packaged it in a 5g sifter jar (without the sifter). I’ve tried a whole slew of things to see if I could figure out the issue: no oil-based products under my eyes, using the powdered eye primer all around my eyes, applying the mascara sparingly. Still no success.
Is anyone else having this challenge? Or does anyone have suggestions?
Thank you!

ParticipantHi Colleen! In another thread in The Hive, we talked about what container would work best for the mascara. Marie talked about how the container has to be perfectly air tight or else it flakes. Perhaps the container is not air tight?
Or, has this always happened?

ParticipantThanks for the response, Penny! Sadly, it has always happened for me. I saw the other thread about the container, so I knew to put it in something that seemed well-sealed.

ParticipantUnfortunately, I found I cannot use the MIU mascara. I love it and it works beautifully, but my lashes are long and I have problems with smudging. So still continue to wear store bought.

ParticipantThat’s a bummer!! Glasses and long eyelashes don’t mix well😖

ParticipantI always get laughed at when I wear my glasses or sunglasses. I wear them halfway down my nose because of them!

ParticipantMy husband has really long lashes and he will only buy certain types of glasses/frames because the whole eyelashes rubbing on lenses thing really bugs him. So, I get that!

ParticipantHmmmm. I’ve had a little thinking about this. Here are some of the questions I have for you Love2DIY.
1) what is your scale like?
2) maybe, if your scale is not .01g accurate, you didnt add in enough of the oils or something like that.
3) do you live in a very dry climate?
4) did you try making the recipe again? Sometimes, there is a fluke.
5) if you do whip up another batch, and your scale is awesomely accurate, what about trying to add in A wee bit more jojoba oil? Flakeing could be drying factor from climate.February 10, 2017 at 4:54 pm #20073Love2DIY
ParticipantHi Penny!
1&2) My scale does measure to 0.01g so that should be good (user error notwithstanding!)
3) I live in Calgary like Marie. It’s hideously dry, but since she’s here too I would assume we’re working with the same lack of humidity.
4) I’ll give it another go! Adding a bit of oil sounds like a good next step.
Thanks for your suggestions!

KeymasterHmm… which emulsifying wax are you using? And are you sifting your clay? Which preservative are you using? Hmmmmm.

ParticipantHey Marie,
I used Vegetable Emulsifying Wax (cetearyl alcohol and Polysorbate 60) and Liquid Germall Plus. I didn’t sift the clay but will give that a try! Thanks!

ParticipantOk, I made a second batch of mascara and it’s working much better! I changed more than one thing, in a totally non-scientific approach, so I don’t know which change fixed the flaking. Or maybe it all did?
This time I used BTMS-50 as the emulsifier and sifted the clay, which reduced the quantity I used by quite a bit! 1 tsp of clay insifted was 1g and sifted it was 0.6g!
I still get a bit of smudging under the eye, but I’ve had it on for 7 hrs today with only one little clean-up.
Thanks for the ideas, Marie!

ParticipantHello lovely DIYers!
I seem to have a similar problem to LOVE2DIY except that instead of flaking it just melts off my face. I have made it twice just to be sure, but it seems to smear off my face. I live in FL where it is very humid and I’m wondering if that has something to do with it. I have very well behaved skin and even the natural store bought mascara stays on well. Any suggestions?
I really want to make this work!July 21, 2017 at 2:49 pm #23231lovenature27
ParticipantI am having this issue as well. I made 2 batches both of which did not work. Not sure what it is. 🙂
