ParticipantHi! It’s me again! And I am trying to formulate a deodorant hack. It is a spray on deodorant that I adore. I find that sometimes I will need to apply it twice a day (if I’m all hot and sweaty) and I am ok with that! And it works lovely as a body spray too. It’s a clear liquid, no colour and is sold in a misting bottle.
So ingredients:
Water (Aqua), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Alcohol Denat., Zinc Phenolsulfonate, Ceteareth-20, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Arctium Lappa Root Extract (Burdock), Equisetum Arvense Extract (Horsetail), Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Vanillin, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Limonene*, Linalool*. * Natural component of essential oils. After watching Marie’s video on the 1% amount, I think that 1% mark is somewhere around Zinc. I’m thinking something like this for a recipe.
50% water/hydrosols
25% aloe
20.5% witch hazel (alcohol based)
3.5% various extracts
.5% essential oils
.5% preservativeWhat are your thoughts? Witch hazel is more expensive than gold here so when it comes to playing with it, I always double and triple check my fomulation- I am ok loosing 10g of sea buckthorn seed oil. I won’t cry. Loosing 10g of witch hazel? I’ll break down.

ParticipantDr. Axe says witch hazel is good at helping excess sweating, so I’m sure it’s true!
Haha!😂😂😂
OK! Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way…..um, I don’t really know all that much about formulating for deodorants. I’m guessing the Zinc phenolsulfonate is the deodorizing component in the original. What are you using as a substitute deodorizing ingredient? Witch hazel? Extracts? Essential oils? I’d be hesitant to use that much witch hazel if it’s that expensive.

ParticipantI came across this some time ago… I have never tried it so I am not sure if it is worth anything but something to check out. I like the idea of making deodorant but I am wary of the baking soda recipes because of my rashes. I found this and I just never really tried it as is…. I did try mixing some lemon grass essential oil with witch hazel in a spray bottle and I just ended up with wet arm pits… But I haven’t tried anything since. that was maybe two years ago.

Participantbelina, I think the deodorizing ingredient is the alcohol, but I am not 100%

ParticipantThe information I found about the zinc phenolsulfonate is that it is used as an antimicrobial, astringent agent in antiperspirants and antiseptics. That’s why I was suggesting the witch hazel+preservative. My other thought was trying to incorperate a salt of some type.
I’ll never apply baking soda again to my arm pits. Oh dear lord. Never again. And straight up alcohol I think would be way too drying without cutting it with possibly aloe.
I honestly don’t mind having sweaty arm pits in the slightest, I mind the stinky stuff. I’m used to applying as needed be it once or ten times a day and think nothing of it (I found by not using most commercial products I have no discolouration, itch factor, rashes, bumps or other issues with my arm pits which is lovely!).

ParticipantI use the toxic, cancer-laden, commercial kind because, no matter how hard I tried, the “natural” alternative did not work. I smelled like a stinky billy-goat all the time, quite a few shirts were ruined by some funky stains/build up/grease stains, I got rashes and worse from some of the essential oils, and I was tired of trying to make it work. So, hello Mitchum deodorant! Now I always smell Baby Powder fresh and am quite the happy camper. Just wait ’till you’re old enough to get hot flashes…..you’ll see what I mean!
Someone on another thread said they use Milk of Magnesia on their arm pits as deodorant and it works great. I have read on some of the voodoo guru sites that Magnesium is a good deodorizing ingredient, although I have not tried this. I guess it’s worth a shot if you can find it, Barb. They melt some magnesium flakes into water and use it as a deodorant spray, or something like that, but you might have to consult *gasp* W******s Mama for the recipe….*groan*😂😂
