How to Make Shampoo Bars

Learn how to make shampoo bars from scratch with five of my favourite shampoo bar recipes!

What is a shampoo bar?

A shampoo bar is a solid, ultra-concentrated brick of shampoo. Liquid shampoo is usually at least 60–80% water, so a shampoo bar will easily last 3–5x as long as a bottle of liquid shampoo!

How do you use a shampoo bar?

Massage a shampoo bar directly into wet hair in the shower and then proceed as you would with normal shampoo. You won’t need much and you won’t believe how much lather you get! You can also use shampoo bars as body wash bars, making them super versatile and a great way to reduce plastic in your shower.

How do you make shampoo bars?

Shampoo bars are pretty simple to make! You’ll generally mash together all the ingredients (melting anything that needs to be melted, like cocoa butter) into a dough-like consistency. You can then shape that dough—squish it into a mould, use a press, or shape it by hand. Once that’s done, you’ll need to leave the bar to dry for a few days, and then it’s ready to use!

What do you need to make shampoo bars?

The primary ingredients needed to make shampoo bars are solid surfactants—they can comprise upwards of 80% of a shampoo bar! Surfactants are the active cleansing ingredient in shampoo, and because we want to make a solid bar, we need solid surfactants.

Examples of solid surfactants include Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa), and Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS). These are all safe, lovely ingredients made from coconuts.

In addition to solid surfactants, you can also include awesome great-for-hair ingredients like silk, argan oil, essential oils, clays, and more ❤️
