This is one of those ideas I came up with just as I drifted off to sleep, so I was pretty pleased that it was good enough for me to remember it the following morning (I wonder how many ideas I’ve lost to the aether as I’ve fallen asleep…). And yes, I do think about lip scrubs, body butters, and mineral make-up as I’m lying in bed. I may have a problem, but I’m okay with it.
My favourite thing about this scrub is its moussey texture. It’s smooth and soft, and buffs off dead skin beautifully. And, after you’re done with your lips, the leftovers make a wonderful leg scrub (I wouldn’t recommend leaving it around too long as it has both water and oil in it).

I used food grade coconut oil for this recipe since I knew it would be so close to my mouth in accidentally-edible quantities.
If you happen to get a taste of it while you’re buffing and scrubbing it away, it’s a wonderful citrus burst with sweet and salty goodness. The scent of the virgin coconut oil combined with all the citrussy goodness is also just lovely and will likely make you long for a beach and Mexico. Sigh.
To get more scrubby power, tweak the salt/sugar balance to have more salt. The sugar will mostly dissolve in the lime juice, but the salt will stay nice and grainy.
I no longer recommend making this recipe—it’s quite old and no longer lives up to my quality standards. If you’re looking for a scrub, I recommend this one!
Lime Margarita Mousse Lip & Body Scrub
2 tsp virgin coconut oil
10 drops kuikuinut oil
4 drops lime essential oil
2 drops lemon essential oil
½ tsp lime or lemon juice
½ tsp lime zest (optional)2 tsp white sugar, more as needed
1½ tsp salt
Thank you for this recipe! I can’t wait to try it. Can something else be used instead of the kuikuinut oil? Like maybe olive oil, or sweet almond?
Thank you so much. You are so inspiring!
Olive, sweet almond, apricot kernel, and even canola would all be great choices here 🙂 Any liquid carrier oil that’s a great moisturizer would be awesome!
I’m not familiar with kuikuinut oil. How does it compare to jojoba or sweet almond?
I’d say it’s more like jojoba, but even closer to castor oil. Kuikuinut is quite thick and glossy, great for adding shine and heavy doses of moisture. It also smells quite oily, so I like to avoid using it in large quantities.
could I use castor oil then?
Yup!
Thank you for posting this! I have been making scrubs lately! I’ve done lemongrass ginger, and lavender ginger! Such great stuff!
Oooh, those sound wonderful 🙂 At this time of year scrubs are so awesome for dry skin, and such a great at-home spa day treat 🙂
What is the shelf life of this? And how could I make a large batch preserve and keep?
If you leave out the lemon juice and store it in the fridge, it should last for several months. To use, you could just scoop a bit out with a clean spoon, transfer it to another container to warm up a wee bit, and then mix in a few drops of lemon juice before using 🙂
Hey Marie! Amazing recipe. I would lie to know how long can i keep it if i would like to store it and use it? And what are your storage tips ? Please and thank you
I’d recommend using it within three days and storing it in the fridge 🙂 Best to use it on the body as well so you can use it all up!
