Plantain Chamomile Ointment

Plantain (Plantago major—not the banana-like fruit!) is one of my favourite herbs, but not for the reasons you might think. I like it because I see it everywhere, growing in alleys and public parks, and I just think it’s a fun thing to see something so useful thriving everywhere. It’s like the sparrow of herbs! It’s also sort of fun to point it out to people as most people just think of it as a nameless weed. Today we’re turning that backyard weed into a really neat Plantain Chamomile Ointment—it’s got a great vaseline-y/ointmenty consistency and is great for summer scrapes and bug bites.

Green Tea Cleansing Oil

I might as well own up to it and declare my solemn love for cleansing oils. We have moved past the crush stage and into a stable, long-term relationship. I love how gentle (yet effective!) they are—they leave my skin feeling delightfully clean without feeling hardcore stripped dry and sad. I also love how they’re crazy easy to make (melt, stir, done!) and customize. I’m on a bit of a green tea extract kick right now (lotion down, more goodies to come!), so I decided to whip up a fragrant, antioxidant packed cleansing lotion when I ran out of my last bottle.

Seaside Emulsified Salt Scrub

I’ve shared a couple emulsified sugar scrubs lately, and in the comments of one of them, Penny asked about salt. Something about her skin loving salt in scrubs, and how perhaps I should try it. Hmmm. Once I started thinking about salt, that quickly led to sea salt… and seaweed… and summer. And the ocean, and bathing suits, and a cold beer (or three) and a good book… and can you tell I’m itching for it to be summer? Ha! Anyhow, back to the scrub—we have ourselves an emulsified scrub with mineral rich sea salt, seaweed, and some great-for-our-skin oils to make a Seaside Emulsified Salt Scrub. That’s pretty awesome on its own—add a chilled cerveza and a great novel to step it up to extra great!

Mint Julep Cleansing Oil

This creamy Mint Julep Cleansing Oil came about as a bit of an accident. I had “Julep oil cleanser” on my to-do list as a recipe request, and without referring back to the original request, I got all excited about an oil cleanser that smelled like a mint julep. Bright, juicy lime and cool, fresh peppermint. Yum, right?! However, upon referring back to the original request, I discovered that Julep was the brand, not the cocktail. Whoops. Oh well—no reason I can’t do both!

Lemon Rose Creamy Body Wash

This brand new Lemon Rose Creamy Body Wash has me seriously excited to take showers. It’s been years since I used a body wash—my shower has been strictly soap since 2011, and I love soap… but I also love trying new things. I especially love trying new things that are awesome! This creamy body wash works up into an utterly lovey, lace-like lather that I just can’t get enough of. I’ll drizzle some on a loofah, work it up into a cloud of bubbles, and go to town. Swoon.

Bill’s Lavender Salve

Back in 2014, Bill wrote to me with a recipe request for a lavender salve he’d been really enjoying using. He described it as “terrific stuff, with a texture just slightly lighter than Vaseline, a quite pungent lavender aroma, and yellow in colour (like lemongrass soaps).” Oooh. And I just happened to have a vintage “Hendonia Ye Olde English Lavender Brilliantine” tin begging to be re-filled, and some brand new cera bellina burning a hole in my pantry. And roughly seven different kinds of lavender essential oil. All that is to say that this salve really needed to be made, and here we are with Bill’s Lavender Salve.
