Snowflake Shampoo Bar

I’m so excited to share this with you; it’s something I’ve been working on for almost a year! This particular recipe has been in testing and tweaking since July. I’ve had a lot of requests for a surfactant-powered shampoo bar (as opposed to a soap based one), and I wanted to make sure what I came up with worked, was thoroughly tested, and was mine, and finally—here we are! This lovely Snowflake Shampoo Bar has lovely lather, lasts for absolutely ages in the shower, and is pretty darn simple to make (it’s mostly waiting and mashing).

Snowflake Face Mask Mix

I’m a huge fan and advocate of clay face masks—I love the pampering factor, how they gently exfoliate, and how they help clear out my pores, leaving my face refreshed and invigorated. For all the praise I heap on them, though, it’s been a hard thing to get my not-DIY-inclined friends to adopt, and I get it. It’s not cheap to buy store-bought clay masks, and when you look at buying the supplies for yourself you’re often looking at minimum quantities of clays and other ingredients that aren’t all that “mini” if you’re not using them for anything other than face masks. All of this adds up to make face mask mixes awesome gifts. Thoughtful, inexpensive when you’re already interested in the ingredients, and valuable to those who don’t want to find space in their home for a kilo or two of light, fluffy powders. Booyah. Enter this Snowflake Face Mask Mix—your friends will thank you!

Coconut Clay Facial Cleanser

Last year, the first thing I ever made with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) was a Gentle Foaming Clay Scrub that I really, really liked—I polished it off in a matter of weeks! For some reason or another I got to thinking about it again, and then I got to missing it, but I’m not one to re-make something if I think I can re-vamp it, so here we are! This Coconut Clay Facial Cleanser adds SCI to a base of clay, with added fragrant coconut milk powder for a rich, creamy feel and some marshmallow root for slip and some emolliency. Add a touch of water to work this creamy powder up to a rich, velvety lather. Oooooh, bubbles.

Forest Facial Cleanser

I dreamt up this cleanser for my friend and super-awesome yoga instructor Danny. He’s pretty much the sole reason I’ve been able to start running again, so when he mentioned he’d be interested in trying some of the things I make, I was on it (I definitely prefer to thank people with personalized DIY concoctions instead of a bottle of wine or flowers wherever possible). I was immediately drawn to the idea of a coniferous-y cleanser, and though I made this Forest Facial Cleanser over a month ago, it seems fitting to share it while I’m relaxing in the middle of a forest in Manitoba.

Green Tea Foaming Hand Wash

I still remember the first time I tried a foaming hand wash; I was a kid (maybe 10?), and visiting some American relatives. They always seemed to get the groovy new tech things first (not to mention all the cool kinds of candy they got that we didn’t! It took what felt like a good decade to get peanut butter M&M’s in Canada. Hrumph.). Anywho, there I am, washing my hands, and I go to get some soap and BAM! There’s a floofy cloud of Disney-scented bubble fluff in my hand. What was this sorcery? I was pretty taken with the entire thing, but my parents didn’t particularly care, and as such the foamy magic never made its way into my day-to-day life. Until now. Enter this oh-so-lovely Green Tea Foaming Hand Wash!
