Spicy Ginger, Sweet Potato, & Bean Stew

Craig’s not much for bragging, so I often end up doing it for him. So, today, I’m here to brag about this awesome stew/soup he made one winter weekend. It’s loaded with awesome things like sweet potatoes and carrots, with boatloads of ginger and garlic, which are great winter immune system boosters. I’m sure they’re more potent raw, but they taste nicer cooked.

African Chickpea & Peanut Butter Soup

My Aunt Karla was raving about this soup while I was at the cottage. I was there towards the tail end of August, so she was already starting to think about winter soup, and I heard about this soup enough times that I insisted she sent the recipe over. And so, last weekend, when I got dove head first into my autumn soup making marathon, this was the first soup I made. It’s worth all the raving.

Smoked Paprika & Lentil Soup

Calgary’s new Bite Groceteria & Café, is my newest food muse. I recently stopped by, and while I managed to stop myself from buying a slab of their beautiful milk chocolate cheesecake, I did indulge in a wide variety of cheeses, some marinated artichokes, and a beautiful tin of hot, smoked paprika. Mmm. I could smell it through the sealed tin and knew I had to have it.

Thai Peanut Butter Soup

Peanut butter soup is one of the best meals I remember my mom making when I was a kid. Now, I’ll admit that 9-year-old me was a bit skeptical at first, but it was delicious, and I can remember telling a kid who was deathly allergic to peanuts that he was really missing out (sorry, Felix). Anyhow, unfortunately for me, my mother completely forgot about that soup, and by the time I thought to ask for it again, she was certain it had never existed. Oh well.

Red Thai Dragon Bowl

The ReBar cookbook has been popping up all over in my life these days. First a copy of it as a Christmas gift, then a cake at a birthday party, and a copy on coffee tables at dinner parties here and there. The chocolate cake would have been enough of an endorsement on its own, but every owner of a copy also had glowing things to say.

Two Lentil Soup

This soup is sort of like emergency rations. Super delicious emergency rations. It’s the sort of thing you can make after coming home from a vacation and deciding you simply can’t be bothered to go grocery shopping just yet.

The majority of this soup is lentils, which are right up there with cockroaches and margarine in terms of shelf life and ability to withstand a nuclear halocaust (though far less dodgy and far more edible).
